Fitness Tips with Kevin McCollum

This month, we asked Acura Parts Manager Kevin McCollum for his best fitness tips!

He personally hits the gym at least 4 times per week, a routine he has stuck to for years, but recommends establishing your own goals and a routine that works for you and will help you reach them! 

One of Kevin’s biggest tips is to establish goals, and stick to a routine.

Do you want to lose 10 pounds? Do you want to gain muscle? Are you doing it for health purposes? You can’t do anything if you don’t have goals

Regarding general health, Kevin says sleep is key. 8-9 hours of sleep is the standard, but he understands that the car industry is generally demanding. ”We work in a field where, you know, we work a crazy amount of hours sometimes. But try to keep a minimum of 6-8 hours of sleep.” He also recommends basing your diet on your goals, making hydration a priority no matter what.

“Focus on your body, you only get one.”

Kevin really emphasized keeping your body healthy. He recommends treating yourself, because your body is the only one you get, and it’s worth every penny. He says to focus on your goals, and give yourself enough time to recover and you’ll be fine.

“If you train harder, you need to recover just as hard.”

Reflecting on an elbow injury he sustained, he recommends listening to your body, and not overtraining.

“It’s important to push yourself, but if it feels like you’re doing more harm than good, stop and reevaluate.” 

The last piece of advice he had was to keep track of your progress. “I have all my stuff set up in notes every week.” He looks back on what he did every week and evaluates how he can progress. He emphasized that small steps matter, and any progress is worth it.

“Don’t overthink it. Start slow and ramp yourself up.”
